Canada : Canadian politician Ruby Dhalla, an Indo-Canadian sensation has been disqualified from the Liberal Party leadership race in a shocking turn of events. A former MP, Dhalla’s contention is that the party kicked her to the curb because she was the only serious candidate that posed a threat to front-runner Mark Carney.
The party’s national director, Azam Ismael, said in a statement on Friday that the decision, which follows an investigation into the party, was based on ten violations of rules regarding leadership and elections, which included problems with financial reporting and election laws but Dhalla maintains the allegations are “false and fabricated,” adding that “clearly the establishment in the Liberal Party of Canada wants to hold on to power.”
Even more surprising thing is that she claims she learned about her disqualification from media reports.
She believes that party insiders were getting anxious about her rising support and strong debate performance. “The tactics employed to force me out of this race only reinforce what we’ve all known, our message was resonating, we were winning, and the establishment was scared,” she wrote.
The Liberals even asked her campaign about potential foreign interference from India according to reports but later denied that had been the case.
It’s the second time an Indo-Canadian candidate has exited the race. They disqualified MP Chandra Arya in January condemning the decision as a threat to the legitimacy of the race and to whom Canada would choose as its next Prime Minister in the next election.
