Chennai : The long-awaited Singaperumal Koil railway flyover near Chengalpattu is being opened today (February 19) after a record of 16 years of construction work. For thousands of daily commuters, this isn’t just another infrastructure project. It’s a long-held relief from endless gridlock.
For the past several years, residents of more than 30 villages in Singaperumal Koil, Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram and Arakkonam have been facing huge traffic congestion as frequent railway gates on the Singaperumal Koil-Sriperumbudur road is closing for long hours. The queues would at times take up over 2 kilometers of distance, making travel a hell, particularly for the peak hours. With this flyover now completed, daily commutes are now expected to be smoother and swift like never before.
The Highways department’s original plan was to hand over the project by December 2024 but the early opening comes as a pleasant surprise for residents who have waited for over a decade. The flyover will help decongest and save time as well as travel safely for everyone.
In a move that is yet another security clampdown, Chennai Railway Police arrested 25 people in a single day against the backdrop of recent crimes against women at railway stations. The arrests were made at Chennai Central and Arakkonam where security was tightened after a woman police constable was harassed. CM MK Stalin has promised prompt actions to protect women and bring justice to victims.
