United States of America : A wave of shock and frustration is sweeping over U.S. government employees after an abrupt directive instructed them to provide a summary of their work or be treated as having resigned. The demand reportedly pushed by Elon Musk and promoted by former President Donald Trump has left many seeking answers.
Over the weekend, federal employees received emails from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) with the subject line: “What did you do last week?” It requested a straightforward bullet-point list of completed tasks by deadline, Monday at 11:59 PM eastern time. Employees were told not to include classified information, links or attachments.
Musk, who has called for government to downsize its personnel, went on X (formerly Twitter) to say his actions aligned with Trump’s vision of a reduced federal workforce. Trump had previously saluted Musk’s actions, but also called on him to be “MORE AGGRESSIVE” in eliminating jobs.
The unprecedented action has prompted confusion, anger and legal worries among the 2.3 million federal employees in the country. As the deadline approaches, many want to know: Is this a move toward efficiency or a purge of government jobs?
