A Dream Dashed: Nepalese Student’s Futile Pursuit of Higher Studies

Odisha : In a tragic incident, 20-year-old Prakriti Lamsal, a promising young girl student from Nepal, committed suicide at Odisha’s Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT). Just hours earlier, she had assured her mother that she would call back after attending a college fest. That call never came but instead her parents got a disheartening call from the university, telling them to rush to Bhubaneswar.

Prakriti, a zealous and hardworking student, sought to please her parents with IT. But friends described her as an introvert who kept her struggles to herself; she had always been a high achiever. This is how her father Sunil Lamsal says about their decision to reach to KIIT after attending a workshop at Kathmandu in 2022 where they were promised with good opportunity for the students.

Now, as he stands waiting in front of AIIMS Bhubaneswar for her post-mortem since Wednesday, he has little but questions. “She sounded perfectly normal when calling her mother at 2:51 PM. And then a few hours later, we received that call from the university…” he continued with his own heart heavy with grief.

Prakriti’s tragic death is a heartbreaking reminder of the invisible demons that many students confront. Her father now hopes no family has to suffer such a loss.
